Lesson 3
A little boy, some signs… and a cheese 🧀
Imagine how wonderful it is to get a glimpse of what’s going on in your little one’s mind! Even at this young age, they’re curious about so much! They notice lots of things, remember what’s happened and already have their own sense of humour.
With baby signs, your baby can share so much of this with you. Getting a glimpse into their world is truly magical! ✨
This little story is about one of the many lovely conversations I had with my son Robin before he could speak. It shows exactly why I’m so passionate about baby sign language. Robin was just 15 months old.
It was quite an ordinary morning…
When Robin woke up, he looked at me and did the sign for FOOD (EAT). “Are you hungry, Robin? Come on, let’s find something to eat!”
We went into the kitchen, and I asked: “What would you like to eat?”
Robin did the CHEESE sign. 🧀
I sat him in his chair and got the cheese from the fridge. He touched it and did the sign for COLD. “Yes, Robin, the cheese is cold! It’s been in the fridge, and it’s cold in there.”
I cut him a slice of cheese. He then did the ZEBRA / STRIPES sign.
Huh? I was confused. Zebra? 🤔
Then I noticed that my new cheese plane had a zigzag pattern that left stripes in the slice of cheese! “Yes, you’re right! The cheese has stripes!” 😆
I showed him the new cheese plane and gave him lots of praise for noticing that!
Then Robin started laughing and did the sign for HIDE.
Now I really didn’t understand what he meant! 😅
He pointed to the big block of cheese. And then I spotted it: underneath was a little cube of cheese!
Robin had had cheese cubes the evening before. One had been left in the bag and was now hiding under the big block of cheese. 🤭🧀
What a lovely glimpse into Robin’s world 💕
Without the signs, I wouldn’t have known any of this!
The signs also gave us more to talk about. I replied with words and signs, showed him the cheese plane and explained why the cheese was cold. An ordinary breakfast became a little conversation – and a shared joke!
For me, that’s one of the loveliest things about baby signs: all those little moments you can share together. 🥰
You don’t need to know all the signs Robin used to get started with your baby. One or two signs from the first lesson are a lovely place to begin.
Sing, play and sign away!
