Lesson 4
Mia’s top tips for success with baby signs
How can you be successful with baby signs? Here are six simple tips from Mia Mjau and me 💕
1. Say the word as you do the sign
Signs are used alongside spoken language. Talk to your baby as you normally would, and do the sign as you say the word clearly.
2. Try to do the signs where your little one can see them
You can try making eye contact, or do the sign where your little one can see it.
Don’t worry if your baby doesn’t seem interested! Keep using the signs anyway. We adults also need a little time to get into the habit of signing.
3. Repeat the signs in everyday situations
Use the same sign whenever it fits naturally – for example, TEDDY when you give your little one their teddy. Repeating a sign in familiar situations helps your baby understand what it means.
4. Play and have fun!
Use the signs with songs and during play – for example, in the nappy song, or when you ask whether your little one wants MORE singing, MORE tickles or MORE bouncing on your lap!
As you learn more signs together, funny sounds and facial expressions can help bring them to life 😸
5. Be patient
Every baby is different! Some are more interested in chewing a book than watching your hands 😅
Their interests often change as they grow and develop.
Keep using the signs and be patient – without expecting a response straight away.
6. Celebrate every attempt!
Your little one’s signs may look different from yours, and that’s absolutely fine!
Not sure what your baby is trying to say? Look at what’s happening and have a guess. Smile and respond with the word and the sign – for example, “Would you like your teddy?” Then give them their teddy. This shows that you’re trying to understand 💕

And remember: Sing, play and sign away!
